I was manning one of the stands for the SFEU and was able to slip away for your keynote. It was really interesting, and I agreed with all you said (cringed abit with the clip at the beginning because those faces looked a little familiar - was that from ferris beuller's day off)
I was showing my 15 year old bebo the other day, who is not particularily interested in computing when she said "oh mum - everybody has one of those" and then proceeded to show me hers!!
This technology is not something that we can just ignore - because it is part of their culture. We either embrase it or face more of these disengaged youngsters in the future .... anyone? anyone?
You're absolutely right Annemarie. I'm just back from another Learning Technologies conference in London & it was clear that we can't just think about meeting the learning and development challenges for today's workforce. We really need to start to work noe to build the infrastructure for tomorrow's workforce and embrace the technologies that they will see as valuable aspects of their lives.
We need to shed the myth that technology is about sitting alone in front of a computer. The Web 2.0 technologies we tried to introduce on Monday are all about connecting with others - socialising,l collaboration and sharing ideas - isn't that what we try to get our learners to do at learning events???
